Leadoff Studio worked with Talsam to create a luxury unboxing experience for Talsam’s smart jewelry. Customer experience was top of mind as we created a packaging design that could deliver the product, then be used continually as a jewelry box and tray. We consider Talsam’s packaging a standalone product that adds value to the user experience beyond its unboxing.
Reusable packaging
To create a long lasting design we drew inspiration from how people store, maintain, and accessorize their jewelry. The Talsam packaging was designed like a jewelry box with a storage drawer that can be used for the charm’s accessories or other jewelry. Indented facets on the top surface create a tray where the charm can be charged or jewelry can be kept. The angled surfaces frame an embossed Talsam logo at the center.
Soft touch textured papers on the exterior and flocked velvety paper lining the interior give the packaging a home goods feel. Ribbons are used for the drawer pull, and on the accessory cards for bracelets and necklaces to create memorable touch points. It was critical to elevate the tactile appeal of the design to ensure customers would see the structural packaging as a luxury item they could keep after the initial unboxing experience.
Integrated technology
At the heart of the product and packaging experience is the ability to gift the Talsam Charm to a loved one. Before the exchange, the gifter is able to digitally connect to the charm and record a message with the unique QR code provided on each sleeve. The gifter has the option to remove the sleeve entirely before gifting the elegant drawer-style box to the recipient, making the unboxing experience feel more like that of luxurious jewelry than a technology product.
Sustainable packaging
In the process of designing the Talsam Charm’s packaging, we made sure every detail of the structural packaging provides a luxury experience beyond the unboxing. Our hope is that Talsam’s customers keep the packaging for its extended use, and don’t dispose of it. The box is made entirely out of rigid cardboard wrapped in textured papers. This construction creates a solid structure that protects the contents and will not easily break, and is fully recyclable at the eventual end of life. The packaging is shipped direct-to-consumers in a custom branded DTC shipper that is fully recyclable.
